Abstract

The paper is an attempt at determination of a prognostic set of events in modern pentathlon. Point results of the participants of the World Championships 1981 at Dzonkow were analyzed. Analysis of the inflution containing these three events accounts for 92.3 percent of the total result in pentathlon was carried out using a multiple regression method. Squares of multiple correlation coefficients (R2) were calculated for each of the total of 31 subsets of events. The optimal subsets with the highest R2 values were selected. A diagram of R2 values for the optimal subsets, according to the number of events in the subset, shows that a subset of three events, i.e. fencing, shooting and cross-country running may be adopted as the prognostic subset. The regression equation containing these three events accounts for 92.3 percent of the total variation of the total result in pentathlon; correlation is very high (R = 0.960). Verf.-Referat
