Abstract

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons held a Symposium on Upper Extremity Injuries in Athletes in Washington, D.C., on June 7-9, 1984. Two hundred health professionals met to learn about these problems. Orthopaedic surgeons, trainers, physical therapists, orthotists, and professional coaches all contributed. Material was presented on anatomy, fractures, biomechanics, mechanisms of injury, diagnosis, treatment (conservative as well as surgical), and rehabilitation. Demonstration clinics were held on proper and, importantly, improper technique as a predisposition for injury in throwing, swimming, and tennis. Emphasis was given to proper diagnosis, prompt recognition, proper treatment, preventive steps, and rehabilitation to allow safe return to sports participation. Verf.-Referat
