Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference in pain tolerance among athletes from different sport disciplines. A cold-pressor test (temperature between 1-3 degrees C) was used to measure pain tolerance. Athletes from five sport disciplines (football, boxing, karate, fencing and cross-country skiing) participated in the experiment. The control group were non-athletes. Football players and cross-country skiers tolerated significantly more pain than fencers and karate participants at the 0.05 level of significance. There was no significant difference in pain tolerance between the other groups. Verf.-Referat
