Abstract

This book gives a comprehensive, up-to-date assessment of the benefits, limits and adaptations of exercise. Five major topics are considered. Exercise and Medicine considers the benefits attainable by individuals whose performance is dictated by non-competitive aspirations, ageing, physical or mental handicap. The next two sections consider limiting factors in short-term and in prolonged exercise. The emphasis in sprint-type activity is on biochemical and physiological factors: biomechanical and orthopaedic aspects are discussed to complement these parameters when considering the impact of endurance exercise. The unique characteristics of sportswomen are presented in a separate section. Evironmental factors which influence performance during exercise are reviewed in the final section. Klappentext
