Abstract

Analyzes the development of English first-class cricket in the modern era in economic terms, using an approach which combines the utility maximization model with the joint-profit maximization model. Describes how the profit consciousness of the cricket cartel developed in an attempt to ensure its survival, and discusses its profit-seeking activities: 1) control of group size to prevent profit dilution, 2) defence against external competition, 3) internal regulation, 4) demand promotion (product diversification and product improvement), 5) supplementary source of income, and 6) cost saving. Explains the aberrations from the goal of maximizing joint profit which occured throughout the history of the game in terms of: 1) pursuit of international playing success, 2) maintenance of tradition, and 3) protection of self-interest by individual clubs.
