Abstract

The impetus for the present investigation occurred during the preparation for a marathon swim-a-thon held at the University of Oregon for fund raising purposes. Two males, aged 24 and 29 years, agreed to attempt to swim continuously for 168 consecutive hours. Since little was known regarding the effects of continuous exercise during long-term sleep deprivation, the outright provision of subjects stimulated the authors to conduct basic physiological tests on the men during their efforts.
