Abstract

Unfortunately the rise in the number of running enthusiasts has been associated with a dramatic increase in the incidence of overuse, musculoskeletal injuries, particularly to the lower extremity. Errors in training are responsible for the majority of these injuries. Other etiological factors include the type of surface that is involved, muscle dysfunction and lack of flexibility, footwear and biomechanical considerations. Modification of the training program to involve alternate day running at comfortable intensity will prevent many overuse injuries. A program of strength and stretching exercises is a necessary step in preparation for running. Assessment of the footwear and attention to the training surface is also an important preventative measure. A thorough evaluation of the biomechanical features of the participant will aid in understanding the stresses accociated with running and allow modification with appropriate cushioning materials or orthotic devices.
