Abstract
In Australia and New Zealand there is active encouragement of children to participate in contact sports. Dental injuries occurring at any age are a traumatic emotional experience, but especially in the young, and may involve costly and complicated treatment. Because of the risk of sustaining orofacial sporting injuries, proper mouthguard protection is recommended from the earliest involvement in organised contact sports. In this review presentation, the functions of mouthguards and the types available are discussed together with results of previous surveys of orofacial sporting injuries in children and young adolescents. Additionally, the importance of team dentists is emphasised. Verf.-Referat
