Abstract

Influences of strength training, androgens and detraining on various aspects of physiological performance and physical health were examined with an adult bodybuilder volunteered as a subject. The six-month training with androgens resulted in great gains in fat-free weight, in mean muscle fibre area, in maximal strength and minor gains in fast force production. Increase in serum T and decrease in SHBG were observed which might have strengthened these possible anabolic effects. Relatively minor changes in the examined physiological parameters occurred during the following 1.5 month training without androgens. Drastic decreases in the subjects FFW, in the mean muscle fibre area and in strength were observed during the following 13.5-month detraining. Maximal anaerobic and aerobic capacity, dropping jumping ability and maximal rate of relaxation remained relatively unaltered during the entire experimental period. As regards the subjects health the low level of serum T 1.5 months after drug withdrawal indicates that sustained drug use may lead to long-lasting impairment of testicular endocrine function. Remarkable decrease noted during drug use in HDL to TOTC-ratio (from 0.43 to 0.07) with concomitant increase in LDL value indicate higher risk for atherosclerosis. Verf.-Referat
