Abstract

Advances in surgical treatment for a spectrum of shoulder problems are presented in this text by authors who have been contributors over a number of years and have a vast clinical experience in treating shoulder problems in the athlete. The chapters include some of the new concepts in glenohumeral instability, rotator cuff disease and impingement, intra-articular problems to the arthroscope, and joint replacement. The results presented by these surgeons not only deal with the control of pain related to shoulder pathology but include expected restoration of function. The first chapter emphasizes the importance of the history, physical examination, and routine roentgenograms, which remain the basis of understanding and treating most shoulder problems in the athlete. There are a number of new diagnostic tests related to the shoulder such as contrast arthrograms, bursagrams, computed axial tomography, bone scans, electromyograms, and others. Several chapters of this text are devoted to the appreciation of the arthroscopic shoulder anatomy and dynamics. The basis for the arthroscopic portals and approach to intra-articular pathology are reviewed in detail. Verf.-Referat
