Abstract

Ten healthy male college students trained with steady state running while ten other male students trained with high intensity interval running. All subjects trained five days per week for a five week period. Nine male students served as a control group. To determine differences in training, time constants for 02 kinetics during submaximal constant load work tests were determined prior to and following the training program. The average time constant for the subjects trained with high intensity interval running decreased from 60.7 sec to 54.4 sec. The average time constant for the subjects trained with steady state running decreased from 61.7 sec to 56.9. There was no significant difference between initial and final measurement for the control group. A comparison between the high intensity interval running group and the steady state running group revealed a significantly faster time constant for the group trained with high intensity interval running.
