Abstract
The paper gives a short introduction to the basic principles and the materialization of a breath-by-breath method. Both the reliability and the effects of correcting algorithms can be studied by means of a testing device which allows different tidal volumes, respiratory frequencies, and respiratory quotients to be simulated. Respiratory gas exchange kinetics and the dynamics of ventilatory control are important fields of application of the breath-by-breath technique.
