Abstract

Variables associated with twisting were analysed cinematographically to determine if longitudinal rotation could be initiated once free of support with and without prior transverse rotation. Three divers performed five different dives from a 7 1/2 meter platform. The dives ranged from jumping feet first, jumping and piking, and various degrees of forward transverse rotations before the initiation of twisting manoeuvres. It was found that skilled divers can twist once free of support and without outside force. The arms were necessary for the initiation of effective twisting, but their use did not insure twisting. Skilled divers transfer rotation from the transverse axis to the longitudinal axis, and the greater the transverse speeds the more effective the twisting speeds. Greater twisting speeds occur when prior transverse rotation is established. Only 180 degrees of twisting could be executed without transverse rotation unless followed by another action. Verf.-Referat
