Abstract

The author exposes the prevention and prophylaxis general principles for ENT pathology related to the aquatic sports practice (swimming, water-polo, plunging, diving, surf, windsurf and waterski). A revision of personal data concerning 684 athletes ENT examinations at Sports Medicine Institute is presented. The aetiology, pathogenesis and therapy of the most common water sports related ENT disease (acute otitis media, swimmers ear, traumatic ear and nose lesions, aural exostosis, sinusitis sequaele) are discussed. The prblem of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy indications is examined in view of offering to the sports medicine specialist valid decision criteria especially regarding the youngest swimmers.
