Abstract
An random sample of 150 amateur cyclists age 27-47 were given the Margaria test for the indirect calculation of their maximum oxygen consumption. The data collected were transferred to a graph showing an abscissa of age group and a co-ordinate of V02max in ml/kg/min. A comparison of the graph with the reports in the literature (Cerretelli, 1973; Astrand, 1952; Margaria et al., 1965) shows: 1) a flatter curve, oxygen consumption levels remaining constant for all age groups; 2) a higher average V02max than found by others; 3) no statistically significant V02max difference between the various age groups. It is therefore concluded that regular training in long distance sports like cycling is highly effective in maintaining cardiocirculatory, respiratory and muscular function. Verf.-Referat
