Abstract

Power (P) is the amount of work done as a function of time i.e. W/t where W = Fs (Force x displacement). All dynamic sports events are dependant on explosive muscle force i.e. displacement of the body mass in space and time. The aim of this study was to determine which of the following tests could predict aptitude for successful participation in a variety of events: horizontal power: short sprint and standing long jump; vertical power: modified step run and standing high jump. The other problem was to determine whether the two tests in each of the two categories were measuring similar components of motor performance. Top sportsmen and women participating in selected events where either vertical or horizontal power should play a major role were tested in the sprint and step run. Correlation matrixes between the four tests were calculated. For this purpose male physical education students (N = 48) and female physical education students (N = 40) were used. The question of specificity of motor performance in the game situation and during simulated testing is discussed. Verf.-Referat
