Abstract

Boxing, Thai Boxing, Karate, Full Contact, Nihon Kempo, Kong Soo Do, Kuk Sool, Kung Fu, Tai Chi Chuan, Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Aikido, Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, Hapkido, Kendo, Kobudo, Hwarang Do, Nin Jitsu, Escrima, Kyudo. These are the sports covered in the book. A historical background is provided for each type of sport and the injuries which occur especially frequently in each are pointed out. The legal and social problems associated with combat sports are discussed as well but there are two main parts to the book. The first stresses prevention. Fighters can do a great deal to make themselves fit and to protect themselves; and coaches and trainers are most important because of the advice they can give in training and in preparation for a bout. The second part of the book covers injuries. It explains what happens to the body in general terms and in relation to particular parts of the body like head and neck, hands, and legs. Each section describes the injury and answers the questions: How safe is it to treat the injury or is expert help necessary? What First Aid should be given? When is it safe to return to train and fight? This information is presented in such a way that it will be understood by people who have had neither medical nor nursing training. It is comprehensive but comprehensible. Klappentext
