Abstract
The measurement of power output during short-term (ca. 20 s) dynamic exercise is described. Forces exerted and, by integration, power generated were continuously monitored during a series of maximal efforts made at different velocities on an isokinetic cycle ergometer. The optimal pedalling speed for maximal peak power generation as defined by the force-velocity relationship was identified as 111 +- 8 rpm in a group of 6 healthy but untrained females.Maximal power output (mean over a complete revolution) calculated at optimal velocity was 446 +- 85 W which was approximately 3 times the maximal exter- nal power available from aerobic energy supply.
