Abstract

In terms of aerobic power and anaerobic threshold, which are important factorsin endurance-type exercises, where one must support his own body weight, younggirls are not handicapped when compared to older females. The capability of the cardiovascular system, which can be evaluated by expressing VO2max in terms of lean body weight, is not different in children or adults of similar fitness levels. While running at the same pace children require greater amounts of energy than adults. This would be a handicap in running activities since they would be working closer to their maximal while pacing themselves with an adult of simular fitness level. For example in our study the pre- puberty group was working at 60 of maximum at 4,5 mph and 79 of maximum at 5,0 mph, the corresponding values for the college-aged girls were 53 and 74. Further investigations are needed in this area on both boys and girls. Verf.-Referat
