Abstract

15 young women wearing figure skates were tested at different speeds from 225 to 350 mmin (x). The O2 cost (y) in mlkgmin was y = - 13.05 + 0.152x, with r = 0.72 and SEE = 6.3. The O2 cost was however different depending upon the skill level: poor, y = -24.5 + 0.21x, r = 0.90, SEE = 3.9; good, y = 22.5 + 0.18x, r = 0.97, SEE 2.6, excellent, y = -46.8 + 0.23x, r = 0.93, SEE = 3.2. The women O2 cost is similar to men wearing hockey skates but higher than malespeed skaters. As compared to men, women skating freely during recreational periods are less active: 203 +- 29.1 and 262 +- 85.3 m min, 14.0 +- 2.0 and 20.9 +- 6.8 ml 02 kgmin and 1.034 +- 148 and 1,837 +- 598 kJ h (X +- SD).
