Abstract
The effects of endogenous and exogenous testosterone were investigated on the compensatory hypertrophy of plantaris and soleus muscles in rats. The compensatory hypertrophy was induced by severing the tendon of gastrocnemius and leaving intact the synergists soleus and plantaris. Male normal and castrated rats and normal females were operated to obtaining the overworked muscles. Theresults confirmed that endogenous testicular hormones did not have any effect on work-induced hypertrophy. On the other side, the administration of high doses of exogenous testosterone showed a myotrophic effect, higly statistically significant on this hypertrophy.
