Abstract
Methods of developing an absolute criterion of athletic performance from competitive results are discussed. Advantages of the field test include precision of data collection, optimum motivation and arousal and specificity of the measured performance. Laboratory predictions of performance can be based on a single variable, but are better obtained by multivariate procedures. Methods of improving such predictions are described. Possible apllications include a national talent search, evaluation of junior contestants, definition of individual weaknesses, monitoring of progress following injury, and assessments of team training and tactics.
