Abstract

Heat injury is a threat to all distance runners regardless of experience. Sustained high metabolic rate and unavoidable dehydration are constant stress to adequate temperature regulation. The best defense against heat injury is prevention; however, heat casualties are inevitable in large warm-weather races, and adequate preparation should be developed to handle these problems. Physicians and other medical personnel who are involved in medical surveillance of road races should familiarize themselves with the clinical syndromes of heat injury and develop a well-coordinated plan for identification and immediate management of heat casualties in road races.
