Abstract

The effects of both a short-term maximal and a moderate longterm ergometer exercise on the concentrations of plasma individual free fatty acids (FFA) were studied in 9 biathlonists who were under regular heavy top-level training. Thirteen male university students volunteered as the control subjects, classified as sedentary and moderate in their physical condition. The present results show a continuous significant increase in the concentration of plasma free fatty acids during long-term muscle work for both the athletes (p<.001) and untrainedsubjects (p<.01). Depending on the group and load after a certain level of loading this increase was found to be significant in all individual free fatty acids exept the stearic acid as compared to the pre-exercise values (p<.001). The changes of the unsaturated palmitoleic and oleic acids were most distinctive. A suggestion was made that during prolonged submaximal exercise both of these acids contribute to the mobilization and extraction of the human FFA more than the other free fatty acids.
