Abstract

Exertion injuries of 48 young track and field athletes, who were training hardand regularly, were recorded in a follow-up study of a 3-year duration. The mean age of the children was 13 years (10 to 15 years) in the beginning of theresearch. Thirty athletes (62.5 ) had these exertion injuries during the follow-up. Only once exertion injury disturbed 50 of those above-mentioned athletes, and 50 had two or more injuries. Of the 52 such injuries, girls had 18 and boys 34. As per training years of the research period, young athletes were estimated to have about one exertion injury per three athletes in 1 year. Of these exertion injuries, about one-third were various growth disorders, seen also in nontraining children, and about two thirds were typical sports injuries seen mostly only in athletes. The degree of the injuries was slight. Operative treatment was not needed. One-third of the cases needed no special therapy, and to about two-thirds conservative treatment (medical) and physiotherapy was given. Sixty of the injuries healed in less than 1 month. The recurrence rate was low. Only a few chronic injuries were noticed. The frequency of the exertion injuries was statistically more notable in those whotrained most than in those who trained less. With still younger children participating nowadays in still harder systematic training, more knowledge is required from coaches in making young athletes training programs well organized and flexible enough in case of possible exertion injuries. These injuries should not cause any potential danger for the health of the athletes musculoskeletal system later in life. Verf.-Referat
