Zusammenfassung

The study analyses the dynamic development of the german ultra-movement, which can be understood as a new generation of football fans and as a medium for changes in the subculture of soccer supporters. The ultras are distinguished by their spectacular performance on the terraces and their avant-garde style of football fandom. They are looking for public attention, try to contest the rapidly changing culture of modern commercial football, bring about united actions and sometimes a great piece of acting. This groups are primarily motivated by the pleasure of producing their own meanings of soccer experience and the pleasure of avoiding the social discipline of the football industry. The ultras are portrayed in this study with the main focus on the aspects of ideology, social background, organization, general practise and cultural productivity. Based on Goffmans work on the presentation of self in everyday life, subsequently the - for the ultras characteristical - tendency of self-representation and self-mediation will be discussed.
