Abstract des Autors

This paper examines Ireland's first outright victory of the British Home Championship in 1914, the annual soccer competition between the countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland inaugurated in 1883, first played in 1884. This paper will look at the primary reasons why the Irish international team struggled against the other British teams, particularly England and Scotland, in the early years of the competition. It will demonstrate that the increased popularity of the game across Ireland allowed it to compete more competitively against its rivals in Britain from the turn of the twentieth century, culminating in the success of 1914.
