Abstract
This essay focuses on the coverage of female soccer bodies in the Norwegian press during the I920-30S, 1970s and 1990s-2007. Men's soccer is and has for a long time been the all-dominant "mediasport" in Norway and in most of the European countries. From the 1990s, female soccer has been reported in Norway and is currently ranked as number three in the world, whereas men's soccer ranks about number 50. The author will examine the myths of soccer as the essence of male European sport. According to Roland Barthes (1957), myths do not deny things; on the contrary, their function is to talk about things, thus making them seem natural. Most important, in this essay, myth is understood as illuminating the taken-for-granted aspect of this male essence, giving the impression of simply seeing the world as it really is and not as highly contingent, ideological and "unnatural". With this in mind, women's soccer has been and might still be understood as being in a state of exclusion from the power of naming. As a result, actions and statements not suitable for media representation may exist in a "mode of silence", which the author names "a gendered rhetoric of silence". Verf.-Referat (geändert)
Abstract
Verf.-Referat
