Abstract
In Denmark, physical education for girls was introduced in 1904; however, there had already been several initiatives in the middle of the nineteenth century in the private schools. The paper examines the way in which the medical discourse around 1900 changed; on the one hand, it helped to introduce physical education for girls from the point of view of health, and, on the other hand, it resulted in a series of medical certificates that argued that girls should not participate in physical education because of many problems that were related to their bodies. The doctors and the female teachers recorded that girls had headaches and other physical problems after participating in gymnastics. The empirical materials in the paper come mainly from the journal entitled Gymnastisk Selskabs Aarskrijt (The Yearbook of the Gymnastic Society) from the period 1900 to 1910. The focus of the paper will be upon the result of the new curriculum for girls and the problems belonging to their exercises and societal norms about the female body. Verf.-Referat (geändert)
Abstract
Verf.-Referat
