Abstract

Gymnastics for girls was integrated into French schools in the late 19th century, but the details of the program to be taught remained a subject of debate. As a result of both the hygienic aim of gymnastics and the dominant representations of the female body, the only difference between physical education for girls and for boys was a principle of moderation for the exercises in order to protect future mothers and the choice of activities to develop aesthetics and grace in order to make a future wife more attractive. For both of these reasons, dance had a unique legitimacy to be integrated into the physical education curriculum for girls. Among the large diversity of forms of dance, however, which one should be selected? Dances de salon (waltz...) and folk dances were considered too incomplete; ballet dancing was considered too acrobatic. Thus, none of these could become a reference. As a consequence, a so-called "callisthenics" was created, taking gymnastics as the model. The first steps of modern dance, however, could modify the landscape of school dance, being in the same position as sport was in comparison to gymnastics. Verf.-Referat

Abstract

Verf.-Referat
