Abstract

Searching for a suitable topic for the field of research of my dear friend and renowned colleague, Gigliola Gori, the I took her work as my point of departure. Her publications focus on the history of women with special emphasis on the Fascist era, on gymnastics and dance, and on women who were "front runners," "ice-breakers" and role models for future generations. I wish to contribute to this book with a biography which fits all the previously mentioned categories by presenting Els Schroder (1899-1996), who played a major role in the German gymnastics movement. She was an excellent gymnast who combined traditional forms of German Turnen with modern forms of rhythmic gymnastics. From her youth onwards, she worked voluntarily in various leadership positions, and, in 1929, she became the first woman to be put in charge of women's Turnen at the national level of the German Gymnastics Association (Deutsche Turnerschaft). She lost this position in 1937 after refusing to join the National Socialist party. Her life and her work are described in the context of the development of women's gymnastics, the women's movement and German society as a whole at that time. Verf.-Referat
