The aspiration to win at all cost and become the best in one's competitive field of sport has led to the growing use of drugs, which are prohibited according to international rules. Regardless of the medical risks involved we are witnessing the use of sophisticated methods to escape detection in major sport events world wide. The author surveys the physiological and neuro-psychological effects of the anabolic steroid group. The survey deals with the physiological task of the steroid hormone group, activity mechanism and its use in the field of competitive sport. Alongside its contribution to training capacity and performance side effects are described in detail, such as: influence on the central nervous system (psychological and behavioral influence) and long and short term clinical influences. In conclusion, the question arises, as to the possibility of neutralizing the spreading phenomenon in the world of amateur and professional sport, or are we facing a snowball effect that cannot be stopped?
