Abstract

Today's mass tourism, particularly Alpine tourism with the Alps as a European hub for sports tourism, is subject to considerable criticism. In the following the authors will discuss the social compatibility of winter tourism and the consequences for the local population in tourist regions. Criticism of tourism can be divided into three dimensions. An ecological dimension, which is established most clearly and with which the public is probably most familiar, a society- and culture-related dimension, which is likely the one most influenced by ideology and an economic dimension, which has not been dealt with in great depth so far (pay-off pressure, price level for land, increased service pressure, high seasonal unemployment). When taking a closer look at the findings with regard to social and cultural compatibility (limited to the Alpine region), questions in the following three aspects arise. History: Can development stages be identified? Contents: What is criticised and how are the arguments presented? Methodology: What kind of data serve as the basis for criticism?
