Abstract

The purpose of the two-year longitudinal study was to clarify the significance of sexual maturation dynamics for improvements in performance of fitness tests. 36 girls (11- to 13-years old at the beginning of the observation) performed 20 m dash, shuttle run 4x9m, standing long jumps, sit-ups in 30 s, squats in 30 s, trunk forward flexion, and Cooper 12-min running test. Sexual maturation dynamics was assessed by stages of breast development (1). Improved standing long jump, 20 m dash and sit-up test associated with attaining the maturation stage 3. MANOVA for repeated measures indicated that improvements in standing long jump were related to the sexual maturation but in sit-up test to the chronological age. When stage 4 was attained, further improvement in standing long jump was related to the chronological age as well as some individual cases of progress in sprint speed. In conclusion, the sexual maturation stage 3 associates with changes in the body which are essential for improved jumping and sprint performance in girls.
