Abstract

Aim. Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP) in the orthopneic position is stronger in comparison with supine and standing posture. However, the effect of trunk dynamic movement pattern on MEP has not been studied so far. We aimed to determine the changes in MEP, muscular activities following the use of different trunk movement in supine position. Methods. Seventy physiotherapy students were included in the study. Different movement patterns of trunk were applied to the students.
Results. The best MEP measurements were observed in lower trunk movement pattern (3rd measurement). It was concluded that respiratory muscle strength changes with the patterns because of the tension generated by changing intraabdominal pressure, and the muscle length changes in supine positions. Conclusion. The flexion and rotation of the lower trunk was seen to have brought significant changes in the MEP measurements in comparison with those of the upper trunk. Changes were acquired in muscle strength in the supine positions with the different trunk movement patterns we applied.
