Abstract

Der amerikanische Sport ist „ethnic based“. Dies soll zum einen an Assimilationsprozessen, zum anderen an der kulturellen Vielfalt des amerikanischen Sports am Beispiel der aus Europa stammenden Amerikaner aufgezeigt werden. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der amerikanischen Turnbewegung, die deutschen Ursprung aufweist. Dabei wird der Gedanke verfolgt, inwiefern der Sport und insbesondere das Turnen zum amerikanischen Nation-building-Prozess beigetragen haben. Vor diesen Ausführungen werden in einem theoretischen Teil die Begriffe Ethnizität, Amerikanisierung und Assimilation sowie Melting Pot und kultureller Pluralismus eingeführt, die in der amerikanischen Diskussion um Ethnizität und Nation-building von Bedeutung sind. Abstract

American sport is “ethnic based”. This will be shown using assimilation processes and the cultural variety of American sports played by Americans of European descent. The special focus of this paper is on the American gymnastics movement which is of German origin. It is examined to what extent sport and particularly gymnastics have contributed to the American nation-building process. In an introductory theoretical part the terms ethnicity, Americanisation, assimilation, as well as melting pot and cultural pluralism are explained. These terms play an important role in the American discussion of ethnicity and nation-building. Verf.-Referat
