Abstract des Autors

The present study describes the effects of cycle training using functional electrical stimulation (FES) on the peripheral circulation and muscle properties of the paralysed lower limbs in individuals with a spinal cord lesion. Before and after training, arterial diameters and blood cell velocities of the femoral artery were measured using Echo-Doppler evaluation. Contractile speed and fatiguability of the quadriceps muscle were obtained during electrically stimulated isometric contractions. FES-cycle training resulted in an improved work output during cycling. Furthermore, quadriceps contractile speed increased and the resistance to fatigue improved. Vascular adaptations to FES-cycling included an increased diameter, increased blood inflow volume and reduced peripheral vascular resistance of the femoral artery. In addition to probable metabolic changes of the exercised muscles, these vascular adaptations may contribute to the improved endurance capacity and thus improved exercise performance of paralysed muscles during FES-cycling in individuals with spinal cord injury. Consequently, this exercise mode may have important benefits for the prevention or treatment of pressure ulcers. Verf.-Referat
