Abstract des Autors

The anti-oxidant defence status and the level of lipid peroxidation were estimated in the blood of horses participating in a 160 km ride. Blood samples were obtained before, halfway (80 km), at the end (160 km), and 12 h after completion of the ride. The results indicate that the endurance ride leads to the development of the oxidative stress in circulating blood of the studied horses, as shown by the sigificant elevation in the amount of TBARS (total thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances) after completion of the ride and the significant decrease in the level of TAS (total antioxidant status) at the halfway stage. Concomitantly, the oxidative stress induced by the exercise resulted in activation of the antioxidant responses (the activities of superoxide dismutase, SOD, glutathione peroxidase, GPX, and glutathione reductase, GR). A positive correlation was detected between the level of TBARS and the activity of creatine kinase (CK) in the serum (r=0.47; P<0.05). Our present data suggest that evaluation of the blood antioxidant status may be useful for determining of whether a horse is well prepared to the competition. Verf.-Referat
