Abstract des Autors

In these two cases, the fast recovery (3 weeks in Case 1 and 10 days in Case 2), the normal radiographic study, and the scintigraphic pattern of linear bone uptake of the radioactive marker are much more suggestive of periostitis than of a stress fracture. We think that tearing of Sharpey's fibers at the origin of flexor digitorum profundus muscle should be raised as a possible mechanism of injury in these as in other cases of periostitis due to stress. The slapshot type of shooting by the two hockey players probably caused resistance force against digit flexion with secondary stress at the origin of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle on the proximal ulnar diaphysis. In our opinion, scintigraphic bone study is a very useful diagnostic method for ulnar periostitis, since a radiograph is usually negative. Sports physicians should be aware of this syndrome, since the prediction of the fast recovery that is associated with it, compared with the recovery associated with stress fracture, can prevent unnecessarily long periods of time before the players can resume practicing their sports.
