Abstract des Autors

The present study examined the extent to which the salience-level of the sport role-identity influenced choice behavior in Division I collegiate baseball players. Identity salience and choice behavior questionnaires were administered to the players (n=159) from eight Division I baseball teams. A significant difference in choice behavior was found between the high sport salience group versus the low and the medium sport salience groups. No significant difference was found in the medium versus low sport salience groups' choice behavior. These findings suggest that the salience-level of the sport identity may influence choice behavior. While further testing of the instruments used is needed, the identification of the factors which influence choice behavior may provide insight as to why some athletes experience distress upon retirement from sport.
