Abstract des Autors
Electrical stimulation-induced leg cycle ergometer (ES-LCE) exercise is available as a tool in the rehabilitation process of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). This mode of exercise can evoke unique physiologic responses that may not be obtained via conventional arm exercise. Research studies strongly suggest that ES-LCE training can offer multiple therapeutic benefits for individuals with SCI including improved physical and mental fitness, as well as reduced risk of acquiring secondary medical complications. This paper reviews the efficacy of ES-LCE exercise with respect to the effects on the muskuloskeletal and cardiopulmonary systems, on psychological parameters, and on functional performance. Also, ways to further improve this technology and efficacy are discussed. Verf.-Referat
