Abstract des Autors

The authors have analysed the data of the last fifteen years activity (1982-1996) of the Sports Medicine Service of the Sanitary Department in Giulianova (TE). The analysis of 16,062 case sheets of the Sports Medicine has shown the main causes of non-suitability which refer to 0.61% of the cases (98 subjects). The period of time taken into consideration has been subdivided into lustres and thanks to a more advanced technology, it emerges that the percentage of non-suitability is about 1% and therefore it is more similar to the one noticed in other studies of epidemiology. The disorders of the circulatory system are the main causes of non-suitability (81%) and refer particularly to those adults who practise aerobics. This data is apparently in contrast with the common conviction of the utility of aerobics in the prevention and rehabilitation of those adults suffering from chronic diseases (coronary heart diseases, hypertension, etc.). But most of the adults practise aerobics, because it is more consonant whith their physical characteristics. The judgement of non-suitability shouldn't be irrevocable, but should refer to the present condition of the athlete and the state of our knowledge. In a word, the judgement could change with the passing of time. We hope for a wider circulation of the reports on cases and experiences of the various Centres and Services of Sports Medicine and for the establishment of a National Epidemiology Observatory, where the data can be inserted.
