Abstract des Autors

Peripheral serum hormonal and metabolic levels during and after the sports season were analysed in 10 male basketball athletes, belonging to a national team. No clinical signs of overuse strain were observed in any of the athletes. During activity, most of our subjects had significantly high levels of aldosterone: only in two athletes they persisted after the recovery period. Besides high aldosterone levels, in two athletes we found high levels of cortisol during the sports season. No significant differences in sodium, potassium, glucose, calcium and hematocrit were found during and after the sports season in our athletes. The elevated aldosterone levels, during activity, could have been accepted as normal since they could reflect alterations in the renin-angiotensin mechanism due to a decrease in renal arterial pressure. Then the changes in cardiovascular system during strenuous exercise can be responsible for the aldosterone increase. Moreover, one can speculate that the high levels of aldosterone during the rest could indicate that some athletes might need a longer time to recover from hard exercise or this situation could be an adaptation to prolonged hard training.
