Morphometry and frequency of myonuclei were studied in biopsy samples of vastus lateralis muscle from 5 male and 4 female athletes and from 9 male and 4 female control subjects. Myonuclear volume, volume fractions and length differed significantly between the athletes and controls. Myonuclear length and volume fractions in all male athletes combined were significantly larger than in male controls (P<0.01 and 0.05, respectively). Mean nuclear length was greater in female than in male controls (P<0.05). The numbers of myonuclear profiles per muscle fibre, but not myonuclear frequencies, were also significantly different between athletes and controls. Verf.-Referat
