Abstract des Autors

In summary, the thermoregulatory system of the horse enables performance of a wide variety of athletic activities without dangerous elevations of body temperature, as can occur in humans. Studies of thermoregulatory physiology can be carried out in the horse during a variety of types of exercise and in a variety of environmental conditions providing a very useful model for humans in whom studies of this type may not be possible. In particular, studies of redistribution of the cardiac output and selective brain cooling during exercise, where exact measurements are limited in human studies, can provide information readily applicable to humans.
