Abstract

Strength deficits in elbow flexion and supination after rupture of the biceps tendon insertion have been estimated at 30% to 40% with even greater deficits for endurance. These estimates are difficult to make with precision because comparisons must be made with either a patient's opposite side or with age-matched controls. For the former, hand dominance confounds definitive characterization of the affected limb's normal strength. For the latter, age-matched controls can vary widely. The following case report offers a unique opportunity to further characterize the deficits after biceps tendon rupture and the advantages of surgical repair over nonoperative treatment, since both treatment options have been employed in the same patient.
