Recreational drug abuse among adolescents and young adults remains a concern in today's society. With the continued popularity of athletic participation in this age group, the sports medicine community should be keenly aware of the signs, symptoms, and performance effects of the most common substances of abuse. This article reviews three commonly abused recreational drugs - marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol - and explores differences in usage among athletic and nonathletic groups and subgroups. Ideas regarding early identification of "at risk" individuals and suggestions for prompt intervention are briefly discussed. Verf.-Referat
