Abstract des Autors

In order to resolve problems related to sports fitness in diabetes we examined 17 insulin-dependent diabetic subjects aged 13 to 54 years (mean 27.5 years), practising sporting activity. The procedure followed was in accordance with DM 18-02-1982 and integrated by the Act n. 115 of 16-03-1987 concerning dispositions for the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus: funduscopy, cardiovascular examination including a maximal exercise stress test on cycle ergometer, neurological examination in order to exclude autonomic neuropathy, glycosylated hemoglobin levels and evaluation of plasma lipidic profile. Only one subject proved unfit while the remainder were considered fit for competitive sport activity on the basis of the favourable exams and good metabolic control. The results suggest the following conclusions: (1) the insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients can practice competitive sport except for a few disciplines which are contraindicated; (2) however, they shouldn't have manifestly disabling complications and must have a good metabolic control; (3) the procedure followed offers good guarantees from a medical legal viewpoint.
