Abstract des Autors

In this study we considered cardiocirculatory behaviour in 6 volleyball players (PV) and 6 basketball players (PC) just before (C) a friendly game (lasting one hour) and within one minute from its end (R). Each group comprised 3 males and 3 females and each athlete was noninvasively tested for cardiovascular function with an impedance cardiograph (mod. NCCOM-3, BoMed, USA) while standing at rest. Considered variables were the cardiac index (IC), stroke index (IS), heart rate (FC) and peripheral vascular resistance index (IRP). With respect to C, at R the PC increased IC (+31%) and FC (+72%) more than PV (IC = +6%, FC = +22%) and in the former athletes IS reduced (-24%) more than in the second (-13%) despite a greater IRP reduction in PC (-33%) than in PV (-8%). Since basketball players in practice ran continuously during the match while volleyball players alternate explosive activities with standing still, in PC rather than in PV a greater activity in catabolites was possible producing vascular dilatation with consequent higher venous blood pooling, and thus greater venous return reduction, which could explain the greater IS aftergame reduction found in these athletes. It may be concluded that after-match, non-invasive, hemodynamic measurement, made with the impedance cardiography method, can give information on the energy supply modalities during the match.
