Abstract des Autors
The incidence of sudden cardiac death among athletes remains exceedingly low, yet these rare tragedies have compelled caregivers to refine preventative strategies. We provide an overview of the athlete's heart, including normal physiologic and morphologic adaptations to exercise, known as the athlete's heart syndrome. Abnormal cardiac pathology is contrasted with these normal adaptations. The diverse causes of cardiac complications during exercise are summarized with an emphasis on the young athlete. Finally, the preparticipation screening of athletes is reviewed, including the cardiovascular historical and physical examination data necessary to complete a thorough examination. Verf.-Referat
